What Not to Do After Getting Dermal Fillers

A dermal filler treatment takes only a few minutes, but the following days influence how the product settles and how the result looks. Most aftercare advice is simple, yet a few common mistakes can increase swelling, bruising or the risk of irregularities. Here is what to avoid after your treatment.

Avoid Touching or Pressing the Treated Area

During the first days, the filler is still integrating into the tissue. Touching, massaging or pressing the area can displace the product and introduce bacteria through the injection points. Avoid sleeping face down for the first two nights, and avoid facial massages unless your injector specifically asks you to massage a particular area.

Stay Away From Intense Physical Activity

Intense exercise increases blood flow and blood pressure, which can make swelling and bruising worse. Wait 24 to 48 hours before resuming running, weight training, hot yoga or contact sports like hockey. Gentle walking is fine. Our article on working out after lip fillers gives more detail.

Don’t Apply Extreme Heat or Cold Directly

Avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs and very hot showers for at least 48 hours, as heat increases swelling. Cold compresses help, but never apply ice directly to the skin: wrap it in a clean cloth and apply it for a few minutes at a time. In winter, protect the treated area from extreme cold and wind, which can irritate sensitive skin.

Avoid Alcohol and Excessive Caffeine

Alcohol dilates blood vessels and can increase bruising and swelling. It is best to avoid it for 24 to 48 hours before and after the treatment. Excessive caffeine can have a similar effect in some people, and good hydration with water supports recovery.

Skip Harsh Facial Treatments

Wait about two weeks before chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser or radiofrequency treatments, and facials involving pressure on the treated areas. Strong active ingredients such as retinoids or exfoliating acids should also be avoided on the area for a few days. Dental work, which involves stretching the lips and mouth, is ideally scheduled two weeks before or after a lip or lower-face filler.

Protect Your Skin From Direct Sunlight

UV exposure can increase redness and swelling and contribute to pigmentation in some skin types. Avoid tanning and prolonged sun exposure for a few days, wear a hat and apply a gentle mineral sunscreen once the injection points have closed. In winter, sun reflected by snow is stronger than many people expect, especially on ski slopes.

A Few More Tips

  • Do not take anti-inflammatory drugs or supplements that increase bleeding without asking your injector.
  • Do not plan an important event the day after your treatment; allow one to two weeks for swelling and bruising to settle.
  • Do not ignore warning signs: blanching, dark or mottled skin, severe pain or vision changes require immediate attention. See our article on dermal filler complications.
