How to Reduce Swelling and Bruising After Dermal Fillers

Swelling and bruising are the most common reactions after a dermal filler treatment. They are usually mild and temporary, but they can be bothersome before returning to work or attending an event. A few simple measures help them settle faster.

Why Swelling and Bruising Happen

Each injection creates a small trauma in the tissue, and the body responds with a short inflammatory reaction. Hyaluronic acid also attracts water, which adds to the swelling in the first days. Bruising occurs when a needle or cannula touches a small blood vessel. Areas with thin skin or many blood vessels, such as the lips and tear troughs, are the most prone. Our article on what causes bruising after an injection explains this in detail.

Immediate Aftercare Tips

  • Apply a cold compress as soon as possible after the treatment.
  • Avoid touching, pressing or massaging the area unless instructed.
  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated for the first two nights.
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 24 to 48 hours.
  • Avoid intense exercise, saunas and hot tubs for 48 hours.

Safe Cooling Techniques

  • Wrap ice or a cold pack in a clean cloth; never apply ice directly to the skin.
  • Apply it for 5 to 10 minutes at a time, several times a day during the first 48 hours.
  • Use light contact, without pressing on the treated area.
  • In winter, avoid exposing the freshly treated area to intense cold and wind for long periods.

Lifestyle Adjustments for Faster Recovery

  • Stay well hydrated.
  • Limit salt, which can promote fluid retention.
  • Get enough sleep.
  • Ask your injector before taking anti-inflammatory drugs; acetaminophen is often preferred for discomfort.
  • Some patients use topical arnica, although the evidence for its effect is limited; ask your injector first.

When to Seek Professional Advice

  • Swelling that increases after 48 to 72 hours.
  • Redness, warmth or pain that worsens, or a fever.
  • Firm, painful lumps.
  • Blanching, dark or mottled skin, severe pain or changes in vision: contact the injector immediately or go to the emergency department.

Common Questions About This Topic

How long does swelling usually last after dermal fillers?

Swelling usually peaks within 24 to 72 hours and subsides within one to two weeks. The lips tend to swell more than other areas.

What is the best way to reduce swelling after lip fillers?

Apply cold compresses wrapped in a cloth, sleep with your head elevated, avoid alcohol, salt and heat, and avoid pressing on the lips.

Can I use makeup to cover bruising after fillers?

Yes, once the injection points have closed, usually after 12 to 24 hours. Apply it gently with clean tools. See our article on makeup after fillers.

Will swelling affect my final filler results?

No. Swelling is temporary. The final result is assessed after about two weeks, once the swelling has subsided.

Do natural remedies help with swelling and bruising?

Cold compresses, hydration and rest are the most effective. Some people use arnica or bromelain, but the evidence is limited; ask your injector before using them.
