Orthovisc main ingredients and device properties

Orthovisc has a sodium hyaluronate base derived from bacterial fermentation of gram-positive bacteria cultures that are processed to produce a tissue-friendly and bioresorbable gel of high elasticity. The product uses non-animal-sourced HA.

Its main ingredient is pure hyaluronic acid of high molecular weight, which is similar to the acid that is normally found in the synovial fluid of the joints. 

Each injection includes 15 mg/ml sodium hyaluronate.

Each box contains 1 x 2ml syringe.

Storage conditions

Orthovisc orthopedic injections should be stored at a room temperature below 25°C. Keep it protected from freezing and direct UV rays. Do not shake the product as it can alter the solution’s consistency. Use Orthovisc before the expiration date indicated on the packaging.

Mode of administration

Orthovisc injections are intended for professional use only. 

Preparation:

• Leave the product at room temperature for 20-45 minutes before use.
• Make sure that the sterile packaging is intact. 
• Sanitise the treatment areas and apply a local anaesthetic if needed.
• Remove any fluid that might have built up in the joint.
• Attach a needle (18G or 21G) to the syringe.

Injection:

• Slowly inject the gel intra-articularly into the joint space. 
• Do not overfill.

Dosage:

• Patients are recommended to get 3 to 4 injections, spaced 1 week apart.
• The amount of gel depends on the injury site. Small synovial joints such as thumbs need 1 ml of gel, while larger ones like hips and knees require 2 ml. 

Post-treatment care

For optimal results and safety reasons, patients who use and order Orthovisc should adhere to these aftercare instructions:

• In case of discomfort or swelling, apply ice packs for 15-20 minutes at a time. 
• Avoid excessive movement.
• Do not engage in high-impact physical activities in the next 48 hours.

Potential side effects

Since the Orthovisc gel is made with pure hyaluronic acid, the side effects that might occur are usually harmless and temporary. 

Common side effects:

• Swelling, redness, pain, bruising, or a hot sensation at the injection site.
• Temporary knee inflammation.

Rare reactions:

• Infection

Contraindications for the treatment

The treatment is not suitable for the following groups of patients:

• Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• Individuals under the age of 18.
• Individuals with hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid ans gram-positive bacteria proteins.
• Patients with bleeding disorders. 
• Patients with inflammation, infections, or any kind of disease present near the affected joints.
